The 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe by Vignale stands as a stunning example of Italian automotive artistry. Chassis number 0135/E, this model showcases Vignale’s distinctive approach with its elegant body curves, open roofline, and iconic features such as chromed front fender slots and recessed taillights. Finished in an eye-catching black and dark red color scheme, the 212 Inter is a masterpiece of design and engineering.
Delivered by Ferrari in late June 1951, 0135/E made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October of that year. Initially sold to the Milanese racing driver Franco Cornacchia, the car was later purchased by Paolo Lampugnani and garnered international attention as the cover car for the February 1952 issue of Road & Track. The car’s journey took it from Milan to California, where it faced an adventurous episode involving a breakdown and subsequent accident.
In the early 1960s, Don Wassermann encountered the Ferrari at BMC Motors in Belmont, but chose not to purchase it after a test drive led to a speeding ticket. The car eventually made its way back to California and was put into storage. Wassermann later acquired the car in 1967 and began a restoration that would span nearly three decades.
In the late 1990s, a well-known Ferrari specialist acquired 0135/E, and in 1999 it was sold to Charles A. “Skeets” Dunn. Under Dunn’s ownership, the car underwent a meticulous restoration by John Amette. The 212 Inter earned top accolades, including a class award at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2003, and a Platinum Award at the Ferrari Club of America International Meeting and Concours in 2004. It also won the Great Ferrari class at The Quail in 2009.
Now part of a distinguished collection since 2014, 0135/E remains in superb condition, with its restoration expertly maintained. Ferrari Classiche confirms that the car retains its original chassis, engine, and differential, though the gearbox has been replaced. The restoration has preserved the car’s original details, including Carello 424 headlights, Scintilla marker lights, and a Jaeger Chronoflite dashboard.
With its rich history, exceptional restoration, and Ferrari Classiche Certification, this Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe by Vignale represents the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship and remains a coveted piece of automotive history.
