Jonathan Wheatley Named Team Principal for Audi’s Future F1 Factory Team

Audi has announced the appointment of Jonathan Wheatley as Team Principal for its future Formula 1 factory team. This move comes shortly after the appointment of Mattia Binotto, further solidifying Audi’s commitment to its ambitious F1 project.

A High-Caliber Addition

Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG, expressed his enthusiasm: “Jonathan Wheatley is a major asset to our Formula 1 team. His extensive experience and significant role in numerous F1 victories and World Championships make him a valuable addition.”

Wheatley’s illustrious career began in the early 1990s with Benetton Formula One, where he quickly advanced to chief mechanic. He later joined Red Bull Racing, where his role as Sporting Director was pivotal in securing six Constructors’ and seven Drivers’ World Championships.

New Management Structure

Wheatley and Mattia Binotto will jointly lead the management team at Sauber Motorsport AG, reporting directly to Gernot Döllner. Binotto will oversee operational and technical aspects as COO and CTO, managing the development of racing cars and serving as the primary technical link between Sauber Motorsport AG and Audi Formula Racing GmbH.

Wheatley will focus on racing performance, operational management of race events, and representing Audi in Formula 1 matters. His appointment, effective by July 2025, is a key element in Audi’s full acquisition of the Sauber Group and its entry into Formula 1.

Exciting Future Ahead

Wheatley commented on his new role: “Leaving Red Bull Racing is bittersweet, but the chance to lead Audi’s F1 factory team is incredibly exciting. I look forward to collaborating with Mattia and tackling this new challenge.”

Binotto added: “Jonathan’s experience and dedication are invaluable. I am eager to work with him to build and lead Audi’s new F1 team to success.”

With these appointments, Audi is poised to make a strong entry into Formula 1, leveraging the expertise of Wheatley and Binotto to navigate the competitive world of motorsport.
